No Wine to Zero

This wine was one of mine. She had been lying there waiting patiently to make my world a better place, to impart the mysteries of the 1990 vintage onto my wine memory only to die an untimely death.

Accidents happen but wine going to zero is something we can and should avoid.

When was the last time you or your wine collecting client did a window check? Do you know what is in the collection, when to drink it and how it is expressing itself?  Wine is a very alive and age worthy product that brings joy to many lives and has a narrative all its own worth protecting and sharing.  Wine by definition is a food, made from grapes grown around the world from specific plots of land, in unique micro-climates with distinctive production techniques.  Going from vineyard to glass is a complex process that takes time and commitment.  Few wines produced are age worthy but those that are deserve to be given a chance to thrive.  Knowing when to drink the wines can be a challenge and certainly storage conditions and transportation can affect the evolution in the bottle. Whether you are buying at retail or a dedicated collector, take the time to think about where the wine is in it's life cycle. The majority of wine is ready to drink now and should be consumed within five years if not tonight.  Knowing when to drink a wine and it's narrative will only make for better life experiences and wine memories and those are certainly worth having.
